Thinking about EARTH IN THE HOT SEAT all day since I wrote the previous post, I remembered that years ago I wrote an article for Parents Magazine called "How I Helped Save the Planet." I wonder if it's online. If I had a little elf or a Queen Louise like Laurie does, I would scan it in and post it as a pdf or something. Anyway, I talked about all we were trying to do to help. We are still doing most of those things (though I seem to remember washing out plastic bags, which became too much of a pain in the neck). Also I think moving to NYC has been a way to help the environment: resources are consolidated, we hardly ever drive, etc. But what more could I be doing? Taking five minute showers like Marfe does is just not an option for me. See my previous post about shower thinking and my waterproof notebook. So besides recycling, using rags more than paper towels, not printing out every single draft of every single book, cutting down on the catalogs I get by going to http://www.catalogchoice.org/, cutting down as much as I can on other junk mail, and never buying those horrible small bottles of water that aren't any better than the tap water anyway, what else can I be doing? Please give me your suggestions. Thanks!

Buy locally produced food whenever possible--less energy is used to get the food from grower to consumer.
Unplug cell phone and ipod charges from the wall when you're done with them--they're constantly sipping energy. And don't forget to turn off the lights when you don't need them.
Thanks, Deb, for spreading the word about Earth in the Hot Seat!
